Review the current Saratoga Springs City Charter
Positives of a Commission form of government
WHAT WE HAVE NOW IS
- Saratoga Springs citizens have enjoyed eight straight years of no tax rate increases while maintaining city services.
- Saratoga Springs has had years of high bond ratings and earned praise from the NYS Comptroller.
- Saratoga Springs’ years of sound financial management have positioned us to weather the current financial crisis better than many cities.
- All elected officials are required to live in the city keeping them in touch with voters and giving them first-hand knowledge of what is going on in the city. They have a vested interest in our quality of life.
- Citizens can talk directly with Commissioners who are responsible for city services rather than deal with layers of bureaucracy.
- All City Council members are elected by voters citywide every two years meaning we ALL have a say in choosing who runs our city.
- Two year terms mean citizens can review the Mayor’s and Commissioners’ performance regularly keeping elected officials “on their toes”.
- Lines of responsibility are clear. Commissioners are responsible for running particular departments and can be held directly accountable for the quality of services provided.
- Under the Commission form of government Saratoga Springs has grown to be the most successful city in Upstate New York known for its lively historic downtown, extensive recreational opportunities, safe streets, and green initiatives.
- Our Mayor and Commissioners have:
-Worked with local businesses to keep downtown open and safe during this pandemic.
-Increased the role of solar energy in the city and included Green Initiatives in the restoration of City Hall.
-Completed the Geyser Crest bike trail.
-Moved ahead with plans for an Eastside Fire and EMT station.
-Added 500 units of affordable housing.
